FEATURED Wall mountable GSM/GPRS modem in sealable housing with isolated 3-wire RS-232 and 3-wire RS-485 interface. Ment for 'heavy' industrial environments: the Indubox GSM/GPRS IV is approved according to extended electromagnetical immunity requirements in the electricity market in Belgium (Laborelec, TST 25-3) and has an embedded Open AT application (Wavecom processor).

 Product Highlights

  • Wall mountable GSM/GPRS modem in sealable housing
  • Embedded Q24PL Wavecom Quadband (800/900/1800/1900 MHZ) module with ARM7 processor, supporting GSM data and GPRS Class 10
  • Open AT firmware version 6.57d: different Open AT applications can be loaded inside the Wavecom processor : for example, an application with Bausch TCP/IP stack (FLIP stack), written in Open AT and with the Indubox GSM/GPRS IV in a permanent TCP socket listen mode (SCK serve mode) when it is connected to an electricity meter. If the host system then wants to 'read' the meter and modem from a distance, it has to open a socket (client) and the communication session will start. The APN connection and the socket listen mode will be checked regularly (every 60 seconds) so that the modem is always ready for an originating socket client and can always send info over a GPRS link. Of course different Open AT programmes can be loaded...the permanent TCP socket listen mode (SCK Serve Mode) is only one possible application... Usually the modems are installed in the field in permanent CSD Mode (GSM data mode) and not in GPRS or SCK Serve Mode
  • Sealable V0/IP-52 enclosure & connector cover with transparent lid
  • Universal integrated power supply 85-264 Vac (optional: 10-60 Vdc)
  • Especially conceived for 'heavy' industrial environments: tested and approved according to TST 25-3 extended immunity requirements in the Belgium electricity market
  • Isolated and in parallel usuable 3-wire RS-232 and RS-485 serial interfaces
  • Non isolated standard serial RS-232 configuration interface (RJ-45) with 8 contacts (configuration via AT-commands)
  • 2-pin (mains) and 3-pin (RS-232 and RS-485 interface) removable terminal block with screw contacts
  • Long term, programmable watchdog: the Indubox GSM/GPRS IV will be reseted automatically each 24 hours to prevent a lock-up
  • 12 LED indicators monitoring the status of the modem
  • CE approved, TST 25-3 approved (extended immunity test report : see 'technical general' below)

 Technical Overview

Need for an industrial modem with high level electromagnetical immunity                                                    At the end of 2006 Bausch Datacom started the development of a new GSM and GPRS ready Indubox modem for the electricity market in Belgium. In this market (in Belgium) the generic EMC immunity standards are not applicable. For example: to test the immunity of GSM and PSTN modems to radiated electromagnetical fields from digital radio telephones Laborelec creates a test environment which generates 30 V/m field strengths in stead of the standard 'normal' field strength of 3 V/m (CISPR24 level = 3 V/m). The result of all these extended electromagnetical immunity tests is the Indubox GSM/GPRS IV, an industrial modem for heavy-duty industrial environments. The modem is built in a double sealable housing with transparent lid  and has two different and parallel usuable isolated serial interfaces, one RS-232 (3-wire), one RS-485 (3-wire). Removable Phoenix terminal blocks with screw contacts (2-pins plug for mains, 3-pins plug for RS-232 and RS-485 interface) make installation easier.
Additional to the electromagnetical immunity to a very high level, the Bausch InduBox GSM/GPRS IV modem has other important industrial features:  a wall mountable, non-flammable and sealable housing, a wide range power supply (90-253 Vac), a 3-level watchdog with programmed reset every 24 hours, etc... Those features are not present on standard desktop GSM/GPRS modems.
The configuration can be done via a standard RJ-45 interface with 8 contacts via AT-commands.  To monitor the status of the InduBox GSM/GPRS IV we have implemented 12 LED indicators. The GSM/GPRS processor inside is a Wavecom Q24PL module.

Open AT application                                                                                                                                            Today all modems used in the Belgian automatic meter reading landscape are normal GSM data modems. For the new industrial meter reading contract in Belgium (since January 2008) Eandis / Netmanagement Wallonie / Sibelga expect the modem to be a GSM modem which is also “GPRS Ready”. But because the future GPRS scenario in the Belgian electricity market is still unknown, we have implemented a very specific open AT application in the Q24PL Wavecom processor of the modem. This application allows 3 working modes to the modem : CSD mode (modem acts as a normal GSM data modem), GPRS mode (modem can receive APN GPRS parameters by SMS but there is no GPRS attachment or APN connection, this mode exists mainly to do an FTP upgrade), Socket serve mode (the modem is in a constant TCP socket listen mode after receiving an SMS and then acts as a socket server, the APN connection and the socket listen mode will be checked regularly (60 seconds) so that the modem is always ready for an originating socket client).

Switching between the 3 modes is possible for example by sending an SMS to the modem with very specific parameters.
It is also possible to change the Open AT application itself ‘over the air’ (OTA); when the modem receives a SMS with specific instructions it will try to make a connection to a FTP server port, download the new OpenAT application, do eventually a 16 bit CRC/MD5 code check to see if the download has been done correctly and then restart with the new Open AT application.
It is important to understand that this is only one possible scenario. Each customer has other demands and each "GPRS ready" situation migth be different...

Industrial, non-flammable and double securable enclosure
The Indubox GSM/GPRS IV is implemented in a robust, non-flammable and double securable enclosure. It's possible to seal the enclosure as well as to secure the power, DTE interfaces and antenna connector.

Interfacing
Besides an isolated 3-wire RS-232 serial interface (RxD,TxD, GND') the Indubox GSM/GPRS IV has a galvanically isolated 3-wire RS-485 serial interface (A,B, GND'). Inside the modem on the PCB is also a non-isolated RJ-45 configuration interface (8 contacts, full serial interface). See below.

Different power supply options
Standard : 90 - 264 Vac / 47 - 63 Hz
Optional : 10-60 Vdc                                                                                                                                                  The mains supply (ac) must be connected to the InduBox GSM/GPRS IV modem via a 2 pin terminal block with screw contacts.

High performance Watchdog Supervision
To prevent a "total lock-up" of the Indubox GSM/GPRS IV we have implemented a long-term watchdog circuit with a programmed reset every 24 hours (Atmel processor).  After the selected reset period of 24 hours, the power supply of the modem will be disconnected for a few seconds IF the Indubox is NOT connected (inactive DCD signal). If a part of the Indubox GSM/GPRS IV is 'locked' after e.g. an unexpected high ESD discharge or surge pulse this watchdog will always insure the continuity of the communication. A ‘heartbeat’-LED is implemented to check this long term watchdog.
