  • Example of Smart Grid Project : Bausch Datacom was awarded a 5-year contract in September 2012 for the supply of 5.000 GPRS Remote Terminal Units to Infrax, a Belgian electricity distribution network company.
    Infrax will use the Bausch DinBox RTU SL6087 to guard and monitor each transformer substation in their 10 kV distribution network using the input information for online load flow calculation. The DinBox RTU SL6087 is connected - RS-485, ModBus RTU - to a Gossen Metrawatt A2000 Multifunctional Power Meter. All data are sent as ASCII Telegrams - GPRS NMKD-3085 ASCII protocol developed by ABB - over GPRS to an ABB Scada-system via TCP/IP sockets in a GPRS link.
    A second goal of this Smart Grid project is to connect all short circuit indicators to the DinBox RTU SL6087: in case of a short circuit in the grid, all necessary data will be available to minimize the loss of power according to the European directives. To monitor the short circuits in the grid Infrax uses the DinBox RTU SL6087 in a version with 4 additional 25F SuperCap capacitors for -short time- power backup, built inside the Phoenix DINrail housing (UEG-EU-BE and UEG-EU-SE)

Technical Overview

Need for a wireless IP-enabled micro-RTU all-in-one for an interesting price
Most RTU suppliers are proud to offer different modular hardware building bricks: so they offer a data logger with optional products like IO, communication interfaces, telecom modems and power back-up devices. All this results in a marvelous range of wonderful products out of which you as a customer have to make a choice and compose your own (expensive) solution if you want the substation to exchange information with the central dispatching or scada system.
However while many RTU manufacturers develop devices based on this 'PLC' concept adding communication, Bausch starts from a Smart Modem concept adding intelligence. A world of difference! Building on this Smart Modem concept we develop our GPRS (micro-) RTU for SCADA monitoring, alarming and logging. This means: the best all-in one solution for the best price.  Because an interesting cost price, that's what should interest you when you are looking to buy a (micro-) RTU. And of course, in such a case we also want to reduce costs by customizing the hardware at the client's demand... wherever intelligent modem communication is needed – solar energy systems, electricity grids, gas, water, electrical car charging units, windmill parks, building automation ... -.

Hardware and software 100% developped from scratch
The DinBox RTU SL8087 is 100% developed from scratch by Bausch Datacom: we can (and will) create specific firmware for your specific application !
Tailor made software is developped in the Atmel ATXMEGA256 processor and / or in the ARM9 SL6087 GSM/GPRS processor, e.g. the IEC 60870-5-104 communication protocol (Open AT Sierra Wireless OS).

Block Diagram

Power Supply:
Wide range 85-264 VAC mains or a 9-25 VDC power supply. The AC powered RTU can be optionally delivered with 25F SuperCap capacitor for -short time- power backup.

Configuration interface:
All local communication with the RTU for configuration, setup and monitoring is done via the serial RS-232 “config interface”.

GSM Module:
Build-in Sierra Wireless (Wavecom) SL6087 GSM/GPRS module, used to transfer data from/to the CTU or host system. The module needs a SIM card with a disabled PIN code request. A standard FME connection is provided for connecting a external GSM antenna.

Atmel ATXMEGA256D3 processor:
All functionalities are automatically guided by the Atmel processor with the proper firmware. This processor will/can control the following tasks:
- communication with the RTC (real time clock)
- communication with the Sierra Wireless (Wavecom) SL6087 GSM/GPRS module
- serial RS-485 communication
- read AD converters to measure AI voltages
- calculations on measured or received data
- DI changes scanning
- set DO's
- write and read data in/from the non volatile FRAM memory
- write and read data in/from the MMC/SD memory

MMC/SD:
MMC/SD card socket. This memory can be used to store the firmware code, configuration, measured data and log information. Status LED 'SD' will illuminate when a proper MMC/SD card is installed.

Supercap power backup

The DinBox RTU SL6087 is powered via a wide range 85-264 Vac mains or a 9-25 Vdc power supply. The AC powered RTU can be optionally delivered with 25F SuperCap capacitor for -short time- power backup.
The SuperCap board with 4x Maxwell PC25 is directly soldered, via two wires, onto the main PCB.

RS-485 2-wire interface

 The DinBox RTU SL6087 has one isolated 2-wire RS-485 interface. This interface can be used to communicate with intelligent periferie.

JP4 can be used to terminate the line with a 120E resistor.

Configuration interface

All local communication with the DinBox RTU SL6087 for configuration, setup and the necessary maintenance tasks is done via the serial “configuration interface”.

The RTU has a serial RS-232 interface (RJ-45) which can be connected to a computer or similar device via a RJ-45 to DB-9 serial cable. Only RxD, TxD, RTS and CTS are used. If RTS is active the LED RTS will illuminate.

A terminal software program (eg. HyperTerminal) must be used to communicate with the RTU. The following parameters must be used :

           Speed : 38.400 bps

           Stop bits : 1
